What do you see in a box full of avocados? Or in a square covered entirely in concrete? What comes to mind when you watch Ana Patricia Botín posting adventure videos from Greenland? Once we put on our climate lens, those images start to reveal something deeper. Behind every seemingly harmless ‘postcard’ lie issues such as drought, deforestation and greenwashing. But at Climática, we go further than simply describing extreme weather events. We ask who is responsible for global heating, who profits from it, and who is fighting to prevent its worst consequences. In other words, who is delaying climate action — and who is working to accelerate it.
We also look at how the food on our tables is produced and distributed, which energy companies power our homes, how neighbourhoods can adapt to heatwaves, and what kind of future awaits the next generations. We approach these questions not from despair or resignation, but through solutions, collective action and new possibilities.
Climática is, first and foremost, a news outlet. Public service journalism is at the heart of what we do. We ask questions — and encourage others to ask them too — because we believe that both information and education are essential to building a new way of understanding the world we live in. We also believe journalism can help drive climate action, in line with the principles promoted by the United Nations. That is why we want to strengthen a trusted space, co-financed by a stable community of supporters who share and spread climate-informed journalism.
We want to be more cooperative than ever — to amplify our impact through all the people who read, share and help shape this new perspective. As of September 2024, Climática has a critical community of more than 700 members who share our goals and concerns. Thanks to every one of them — especially those who have supported us since our beginnings back in 2019 — we are able to publish investigations, analysis and reporting free from the pressure of investors, executives or corporate interests. After five years of continuous work, Climática has become a trusted source of information for the scientific community, environmental educators and thousands of readers concerned about the greatest challenge humanity faces today.
Now we want to transform Climática into a stronger and more pioneering media project, with the kind of sections usually found in mainstream news outlets, but where every story is approached through a climate perspective. Our next challenge is to reach wider audiences — not only by informing, but also by educating and engaging — while remaining fully committed to our ethical principles.
We are a non-profit cooperative media outlet. That cooperative DNA is what guarantees our independence. Climática has no major shareholders or corporate executives. The publishing company is entirely owned by its workers and readers. Our newsroom is made up of journalists and professionals who genuinely believe in what they do, and who consciously reject the lucrative income that comes from disguised advertising or sponsored content. That independence is one of our greatest strengths.
Still, if we want to continue doing independent journalism, we need to grow our community. That is why we invite you to become part of Climática and join us as a cooperative supporter. The more people who become part of this community, the stronger and more influential we can be together.
Main features and goals of the crowdfunding campaign
Climática is a rigorous media outlet grounded in science, but it is also a way of understanding and engaging with the world. To do this, we rely on:
A daily news platform, climatica.coop, where we have already published more than 3,800 articles covering international affairs, society, politics, culture and economics — always through a climate lens. This track record reflects our understanding that the climate crisis cuts across every aspect of life and that the defining events of our time must be reported on with climate glasses on. Our community also values the fact that every article on climatica.coop is freely accessible and that the website only uses essential technical cookies required for its operation.
An annual magazine, published both digitally and in print. Across its four editions so far — each over 100 pages long — readers can find work by leading reporters and photographers, analysis from recognised experts, cultural recommendations and much more.
Uni Climática, which celebrated its fifth edition in 2024, is a specialised climate education programme. Its online classroom has already welcomed more than 2,000 students and 200 speakers from different countries, with the aim of making key concepts such as mitigation, adaptation and climate solutions accessible to the wider public. Through Climática, we do not only inform — we also educate a diverse community about the climate crisis and its impact on the economy, politics, food systems, quality of life and much more.
The podcast La Climática. In spring 2024, we launched Climática’s first podcast season. Across ten episodes, hosted by Rocío Gómez with sound design by Eloy de la Haza, the podcast has built its own audience thanks to its engaging yet in-depth approach. Recommended by media outlets such as elDiario.es, El País and RNE, La Climática also hosted a weekly segment on Cadena SER during the summer of 2024.
A climate-conscious community, made up of people with a critical spirit who believe that climate action is both necessary and capable of making a positive difference. We believe journalism must hold political and economic power accountable and push for meaningful change. At the same time, we explore alternatives to the ways we consume, travel and live, aware that these choices may shape the coming decades. Subscribers do not just support the publication financially — they also become part of a community with access to activities, training sessions and gatherings where ideas, solutions and strategies for change can be discussed. In autumn 2024, we launched the Climática Reading Club.
Our goals
-
To consolidate Climática as the leading specialist media outlet for coverage of the climate and biodiversity crises. At the same time, we want to reach wider audiences by addressing diverse topics through an environmental and climate perspective.
-
To expand our community base. As of autumn 2024, more than 700 people contribute to funding Climática through subscriptions. To secure the minimum annual income needed to continue publishing with the same quality, frequency and independence, we need 2,000 additional subscribers. Through this campaign, we encourage readers to become cooperative supporters of Climática and collectively sustain 50% of the publication’s total budget.
-
To produce the second season of the podcast La Climática, hosted by Rocío Gómez and sound-designed by Eloy de la Haza. The first ten episodes helped us bring climate journalism to audiences who do not usually engage with written media. The podcast is currently preparing a special live programme for the Festival Cridem pel Clima 2024.
-
To organise new online and in-person courses that promote accessible and affordable climate education for diverse non-specialist audiences.
-
To strengthen participation within the Climática community through regular events and activities. One recent initiative is the Climática Reading Club, launched in October 2024 and led by journalist and writer Laura Casielles. We also plan to organise film forums and online talks with experts from different fields. At the same time, we are developing new channels so subscribers can suggest topics, share feedback and actively contribute ideas.
-
To produce audiovisual content that helps explain and communicate complex climate concepts to new audiences, especially younger generations. These materials must be engaging, accessible and easy to share across social media platforms.
Why this is important
More than 700 people are already part of the community supporting Climática. But it’s not enough — we need to grow, and quickly, to ensure the long-term sustainability of this independent media outlet. That’s why we’re looking for:
-
People, cooperatives and organisations tired of seeing ‘eco-friendly’ advertising campaigns from the same multinationals most responsible for climate destruction, frustrated by watching COP after COP pass while those in power continue delaying meaningful action against global heating. Yet rather than giving in to resignation, they want better and deeper information on a wide range of issues, from climate litigation and carbon markets to cultural recommendations and everyday alternatives.
-
People who believe in the power of climate inform-action — information and education as tools to push governments, international institutions and corporations to cut CO2 emissions as soon as possible.
-
Members of the scientific communication and environmental education communities looking for spaces where knowledge can be shared, discussed and made accessible.
-
Individuals and grassroots organisations that want to build networks and coordinate collective action, understanding that the most effective climate action is never individual, but collective. They seek and share reporting, analysis and stories about solutions that can be replicated elsewhere or that inspire different, more sustainable ways of living.
If you see yourself in any of these descriptions, we invite you to join our community. Support inform-action. Become a Climática cooperative supporter through Goteo and help strengthen a rigorous, independent media space — free from greenwashing and protected against political or corporate pressure.
Team and experience
Climática was founded in 2019 as a special supplement on global heating within La Marea magazine. Since 2024, it has operated as an independent media outlet published by the same cooperative behind La Marea, established in 2012. As a result, Climática is backed by a professional team with a long track record and extensive experience in collectively financing ambitious journalism projects.
Thanks to previous crowdfunding campaigns organised through Goteo, our cooperative has successfully launched initiatives such as PorTodas — an investigative journalism project examining what happens before and after a femicide — yoIBEXtigo, focused on investigating the companies that make up Spain’s IBEX35 stock index, and La Uni en la calle, a book bringing together 113 essays written by 152 university lecturers.
In 2022, La Marea launched what was, at the time, the most ambitious crowdfunding campaign ever carried out by a media outlet in Spain.
