After 80 days sharing news, activities, posters, heartaches due to the news in the media, joys due to your messages of support and contributions, the emotion that overwhelms us is such that we don't think we are able to put so many feelings into words.
It has been an intense few days of activity in which we have tried to raise awareness of the extractive mining project that threatens the Dehesa de Las Navas in Cañaveral. The third energy colonisation of Extremadura is underway. With the first two, our region has not been lifted out of poverty, nor have our young people stopped emigrating. The current approach, purely speculative on the part of the companies behind the project and propagandistic on the part of the politicians, is just more of the same. Solar panels, gigantic windmills, opencast mines everywhere on our territory will, according to some, be the "cure" for unemployment and for the development in our region. What we will find will be few jobs, of poor quality and duration, and occupation and looting of our territory for the profit of the promoting company. Surprisingly, neither the companies nor the politicians who support these projects tell us about the negative side of these projects, which affects us all: the toxicity of the processes, the danger of contamination of our water and depletion of aquifers due to the enormous quantities of water needed in these extractive processes, the ecological crime that these projects entail, which ruthlessly plunder territories by cutting down centuries-old holm oaks, destroying ecosystems and habitats; the very low percentage of regeneration in this type of extractive industry that leaves the territory solidated and full of toxic ponds, the lack of monitoring and/or inspection of compliance of the so called ecological and green commitments proclaimed by the companies that intend to install these projects, the "non-refundable" subsidies that are given to these entities that, without hesitation, abandon the territory in whatever conditions it is in when their " business" is no longer profitable (fall in the stock market price of the mineral being extracted, for example).
We believe that these are more than enough reasons to take a stand against this extractivist mining project.
"We are not only environmentalists, we are patriots. We don't want Extremadura to become a sacrifice zone".
And because this struggle belongs to all of us, we would like to thank you for your presence and collaboration in this campaign.
