General information

In her quest to recover her family's history from Franco's shadow, a filmmaker confronts her father's silence, uncovering the weight of inherited trauma and unresolved grief.

Inherited Silence is a film student's deeply personal journey to uncover her family's hidden history, prompted by a simple question about two faded portraits in her father's house. Her quest takes her to her family's village, a place marked by the echoes of the Spanish Civil War and the long shadow of Franco's dictatorship. In the village house, she discovers letters and fragments of its history, reconstructing the lives of her relatives who suffered under the regime: those who were killed, those who were forced into exile and those who were left to endure a life of forced silence and unresolved grief.

Why this is important

This project was born out of a simple but powerful question: who were the men in those portraits hanging in my house? I grew up looking at their images without knowing their stories. When I discovered that they were my great uncles, killed during the Civil War, I realised that this was not just a personal story, but that of thousands of families in Spain.

For generations, silence has been a form of survival. Repression did not end with the war, but continued in families, in villages and in society, where remembering became a dangerous act. However, new generations have the opportunity to question, to investigate and to reconstruct what was lost.

This documentary is aimed at:
🔸 Descendants of victims and reprisals who are looking for answers.
🔸 Families who have experienced silence or intergenerational trauma and want to understand how it affects their present.
🔸 Historians, researchers and activists of historical memory.
🔸 People interested in documentary film, memory and human rights.

This is not just a documentary, it is an invitation to reflect on how we remember, how we forget and how we can heal.

Team and experience

About me and the team:

Lola Barrero (The Director): I am a film student at the University of Edinburgh in Scotland, in my final year of my degree. My background in documentary filmmaking and my personal experience with family memory have led me to undertake this project with passion and commitment. This film is not only an exercise in research and creation, but a vital need to tell what has been silenced for too long. My team is built of a range of students from Edinburgh College of Art and the wider Edinburgh community, as well as my own network of filmmakers and artists.

Manuel Barrero Iglesias: Hi! I'm Manuel, a filmmaker with experience in fiction and documentary. As the director's brother, I have collaborated on cinematography to capture the story of our family. My short film ‘Vino y se fue’ was a finalist in the Rueda con Rueda contest.

Lauren Musa-Green: I am the Executive and Creative Producer on this film, working directly with Lola to bring the project into fruition. I have been involved in the project from almost the very beginning, contributing to the narrative, editing, and coordination of both technical and organizational aspects. I aim to use documentaries as a tool to inspire social change, and am keen on propelling voices from marginalized communities.

Jackson Barkess: I’m Jackson and I’ll be working as a production assistant. I’m really keen to gain experience both in producing and in working on a documentary, and am super excited to be able to work alongside Lola and Lauren in doing so. I’m hoping to pursue a career in film producing and maybe documentary too, and Inherited Silence has proved to be an enriching and exciting precipitation to that future.

Oli Drake: Hi, I’m Oli, a Yorkshire-born graphic designer with a passion for creating bold and impactful designs. My part in the making of Inherited Silence was Poster Design, with an air of mystery that reflects its powerful story and unforgettable imagery. As an aspiring graphic designer, I love to explore the blend of imagery and typography to guarantee fresh design!

Andrea Magana: My name is Andrea and I was lucky to be recruited for this project as a Spanish speaker for the role of editing assistant. I am also in charge of making a trailer to get people excited about the film! I aspire to work on projects that are a part of something bigger than themselves.

Grace Mitchell: I designed the visuals that involve motion graphics to explore and set the tone of the film through the use of imagery, effects and typography. I'm also drawn to the world of graphic props which focuses on designing tactile pieces like newspapers, packaging and posters to make a cinematic universe feel authentic and enhance the visual storytelling

Misty-Jo Pett-Ruas: I'm a composer and musician passionate about storytelling through music. I graduated with a degree in music, specialising in composition, singing, and drumming. I love exploring how sound shapes emotion and narrative, and my goal is to work in film scoring, creating music that enhances visual storytelling.

Eilidh Anderson: I’m a Scottish sound designer currently studying film at Edinburgh College of Art. I’ve had a passion for anything noisy since before I can remember and am always excited to work on any projects, from documentary to fiction film.

Beth Palazuelos Garcia: Hi, I'm Beth and I'm assisting with translation! I'll be translating promotional materials and helping with the subtitling of Inherited Silence.

Callum Tyler: Hi I’m Callum and I’m doing the colour grading for Inherited Silence. I am passionate about post production, mostly having experience with sound mixing and video editing, but am looking forward to using this project to expand my horizons and improve my skills.
