General information

SURF & NATURE 2022

Surf & Nature is a socio-educational project aimed at young people from the rural village of Briech, located in the north of Morocco.
Using surfing and the privileged natural environment of the area, we promote sport and healthy lifestyles, raise environmental awareness and promote gender equality.

Why through surfing?

The practice of this sport among the children and teenagers of this coastal town is becoming increasingly popular as the summer holidays approach. Despite the limitations of sporting equipment they face, this does not prevent them from sharing, inventing new techniques and looking for any opportunity to enjoy this discipline. That is why we promote surfing, as well as for all the benefits it brings:

  • Physical health benefits: Stress relief, emotional well-being, coordination and balance, impulse control, improved self-esteem.
  • Positive psychosocial effects: Promotes healthy competitiveness and stimulates healthy interpersonal relationships.
  • Promotion of gender equality: Girls and adolescents challenge gender stereotypes, become role models and show equality.
  • Community level benefits: Potential for sustainable local development (surf and sustainable tourism boom worldwide), promotion of healthy lifestyles in harmony with the environment, and enhancement of the natural environment.

Main features and goals of the crowdfunding campaign

**Main objective

We want to offer young people in Briech healthy leisure alternatives, in line with their own environment and promoting gender equality from an early age.

**How are we going to achieve this?

Through non-formal educational activities aimed at:

  • Raise environmental awareness
  • Promoting healthy lifestyles
  • Reflecting on alternatives for sustainable local development
  • Bringing the socio-cultural scene closer to young people.

Promoting gender equality at all times in all activities!

Why this is important

The village of Aqouass Briech is located on the Atlantic coast of northwest Morocco, surrounded by a privileged natural environment.
Being a rural area, social vulnerability and lack of resources are some of the constraints faced by its inhabitants from a very early age.

The rate of school dropout and early work (30.6% of the population works for the first time between the ages of 11 and 15) is common.
On the other hand, gender inequality is perpetuated in rural areas, because they do not have the same tools as in big cities to address the gender gap that is present in all areas of daily, social and working life.

This is why we target all the actions of Surf & Nature at young people between 8 and 18 years old (50% boys - 50% girls).

The health crisis resulting from COVID-19 is questioning current lifestyles, highlighting the need to create more frequent and sustainable relationships with the environment. In this context, the isolation that has been common in rural areas is being interrupted by an incipient tourism that seeks precisely to escape from agglomerations and come into contact with nature.
In recent decades, Morocco has been experiencing a surfing tourism boom, mainly in the southern regions, due to the quality of its waves and the good climate. In the case of the region that concerns us, the north of Morocco, the scenario is different. Although there are good conditions for the practice of sport, the territory still has considerable potential for the development of local activities related to sport and the environment.

For all of the above reasons, we believe it is a priority to train the rural population in sustainable tourism, so that they themselves can be responsible managers of their own heritage. To this end, Environmental Education is essential: to impart environmental awareness, ecological knowledge, attitudes and values towards the environment in order to make a commitment to actions and responsibilities aimed at the rational use of resources and thus be able to achieve adequate and sustainable development.

The commitment to sustainable development can improve the quality of life of its inhabitants, thus combating the western ideal so present among the country's youth.

Team and experience

The first edition of the SURF&NATURE project was carried out during the months of April, May and June 2021 and reached a total of 30 young people in vulnerable situations, 33% of whom were girls.
During these 3 months, we carried out a programme to raise environmental awareness and promote sport and healthy lifestyles through surfing and the arts. With your help, we will be able to carry out the next edition of the SURF&NATURE project and make the achievements of the last edition last in time.

Who is behind all of this?
Celia Moro (Cultural Manager and Artist) and Manuel Guerra (International Cooperant and Surfer) from Cádiz and now living in Briech, Morocco, could not turn their eyes away from the needs and deficiencies of the young people of Briech.
